š Looking for Family or In-Home Child Care?
Some families prefer a smaller, home-like child care environment.
Pennsylvania regulates child care centers, group child care homes, and family child care homes. Many family child care providers do not maintain public websites, and openings may change frequently.
For privacy and accuracy, this guide does not publish a large directory of residential child care addresses.
Instead, use Pennsylvania's official Child Care Provider Search to find certified family and group child care homes near your:

ā What Is Keystone STARS?
You may see a Keystone STARS designation when researching child care.
Keystone STARS is Pennsylvania's quality rating and improvement system for child care and early-learning programs. Participating providers can earn ratings from STAR 1 through STAR 4.
A STAR rating can be one helpful piece of information, but families may also want to consider:
- Hours and location
- Caregiver-child interactions
- Staff experience and turnover
- Communication with families
- Your child's individual needs
- Cost and financial assistance
- The overall feel of the program
š Learn About Keystone STARS
š”ļø Check a Provider's Certification & Inspection History
Before enrolling your child, take a few minutes to check Pennsylvania's official provider records.
Families can use the state's Child Care Provider Search to locate regulated programs and review available information about certification, inspections, complaints, Keystone STARS participation, and other program details.

Macaroni KID Tip
Don't search only around your house.
Try locations near your:
š Home
š¼ Workplace
š« Child's school
š Daily commute
Sometimes the best child care option isn't the one closest to home — it's the one that makes your family's whole day work better.
ā Questions to Ask When Choosing Child Care
When you call or tour a provider, consider asking:
- What ages do you currently have openings for?
- Is there a waitlist?
- What are your hours?
- Is part-time care available?
- What is tuition, and are there additional fees?
- Do you accept Child Care Works?
- Are meals and snacks included?
- What are your staff-to-child ratios?
- How long have your caregivers been with the program?
- How do you communicate with families during the day?
- How do you handle bottles, naps, diapers, and potty training?
- What is your illness policy?
- How are allergies and medications handled?
- How much outdoor and active play do children have?
- How do you handle challenging behavior?
- What is your emergency plan?
- Do you offer sibling discounts?
- Which schools do you serve for school-age care?
- Is transportation available?
- Do you provide care when school is closed?
- Do you offer summer care?
- May we tour the program?
- Where can we review your Pennsylvania certification and inspection history?
ā¤ļø One More Thing to Notice During a Tour
A checklist is helpful, but pay attention to how a program feels, too.
Watch how caregivers interact with children. Do they speak warmly to them? Do they get down on children's level? Do the children seem comfortable approaching the adults?
Look around the environment. Is there room for children to play, explore, move, and rest?
Most importantly, ask yourself:
Can I picture my child feeling safe, comfortable, and known here?
