Welcome to Chambersburg!
Whether you just moved here, are considering a move, or have lived in the area for a little while and still feel “new,” this guide is designed to help your family get oriented, find the resources you need, and start discovering the places and traditions that make Chambersburg feel like home.
Moving to a new community comes with a lot of questions. Where do I register the kids for school? Which library should we use? Where are the good playgrounds? What does everyone mean by “the fountain”? Where do families go in the summer? How do we find sports, camps, storytimes, and things to do?
That’s exactly why we created this guide.
Think of it as your family-friendly introduction to Chambersburg — with links to even more local resources whenever you’re ready to dig deeper.
New Here? Start at the Fountain
If you want to start getting to know Chambersburg, Memorial Square in downtown Chambersburg is a great place to begin.
The Memorial Fountain sits at the center of town and is one of Chambersburg’s most recognizable landmarks. Around it, you’ll find local businesses, restaurants, historic buildings, community events, and plenty of reminders of the town’s past.
Take a walk around the Square, explore Main Street, visit nearby Chambers Fort Park and the Rail Trail, and see what’s happening downtown. Before long, when someone says “the fountain,” you’ll know exactly what they mean.

Your municipality can affect utilities, trash and recycling, taxes, recreation programs, municipal services, and resident versus nonresident rates.

Why Does Chambersburg Talk So Much About 1864?
Chambersburg’s identity is closely tied to its Civil War history. In 1864, Confederate forces burned much of the town. Chambersburg rebuilt, and that story of destruction and resilience still appears in local landmarks and community traditions today.
Understanding that history also makes events such as the Burning of Chambersburg and ChambersFest make a lot more sense.
